The Magic of Old Asia

Myanmar (formerly Burma) has had a tumultuous past. Over the years it has been ruled by the Mongols, China, France and Britain. It was the site of intense fighting during World War II. In 1948, Burma became an independent nation. But a military coup in 1962, put an end to Burma’s fledgling democracy. International attention focused on Myanmar when opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. The world watched again in 2007, when demonstrations led by Burmese monks resulted in the imprisonment of monks and other protesters, as well as the deaths of some protesters and a Japanese reporter. After more than 50 years of military rule Myanmar finally achieved an elected civilian government. But, Myanmar found itself facing criticism from the rest of the world, thanks to its ongoing persecution of the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority living in western Myanmar.

Update: Myanmar’s military seized power in the early morning of February 1, 2021 after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and other elected leaders. Ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been in detention since the coup took place and is due to appear for another court hearing via video conferencing after a previous hearing had to be adjourned due to Internet problems. Military can be seen patrolling the streets and a night-time curfew is now in force, with a one-year state of emergency declared. Movement around the cities have been disrupted with major roads blocked off and the internet remains shut between 1 am and 9 am until further notice. Protesters have called for a ‘silent strike’ with businesses and shops set to close and people to stay in their homes, with the aim of shutting down entire towns and cities. Domestic and International airports are closed until further notice.

Thank you for planning Myanmar for us! We had a blast! The food was great, the pace was great and our guide (Chung Yein) was awesome! We traveled with Chung from Yangon to Ngapali and the fact that we had one guide for the whole trip was outstanding. We got to bond with him and his knowledge and enthusiasm for history and his country were contagious and he had a great sense of humor. And, his English was great. He got us through the airports without any hassle and we were very spoiled by the end. One of the best things he did for us was stopping at a monastery where the locals were having a wedding reception, so we got to observe the receiption first hand! Of all the places we visited, Bagan and Inle Lake were my favorites. Ngapali beach was also great and the hotel was awesome – great setting, great bungalows, great staff and small enough that it did not feel crowded, even at meal times. The various drivers were courteous and the cars were clean. So, thank you for all your help planning our trip!!
