The Magic of Old Asia

Myanmar (formerly Burma) has had a tumultuous past. Over the years it has been ruled by the Mongols, China, France and Britain. It was the site of intense fighting during World War II. In 1948, Burma became an independent nation. But a military coup in 1962, put an end to Burma’s fledgling democracy. International attention focused on Myanmar when opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. The world watched again in 2007, when demonstrations led by Burmese monks resulted in the imprisonment of monks and other protesters, as well as the deaths of some protesters and a Japanese reporter. The good news is that after more than 50 years of military rule Myanmar finally has an elected civilian government. But, Myanmar still finds itself facing criticism from the rest of the world, thanks to its ongoing persecution of the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority living in western Myanmar.

View Sample Itineraries

Tourism in Myanmar has taken off in recent years. Though the government is working to enhance its infrastructure, and though many new hotels have opened with more being built, the availability of expert guides and high-end accommodations can’t always meet the demand. We strongly encourage travelers to book their trips to Myanmar well in advance in order to secure the best guides and accommodations.

Many people say that Myanmar is not only the jewel of Southeast Asia, but one of the most enthralling places on earth. We can’t help but agree.

At Southeast Asia Tours, we design tours for any number of people and any length of stay. The focus is always on your special interests and desires. Here are just a few samples of the kind of trip that we can design just for you.

Myanmar Sample Itineraries include sightseeing and transfers with private guide and driver. Discounts are available if you have a group of people who want to travel together. A variety of hotel options are available. Prices are available upon request, based upon your budget and hotel preferences. These Sample Itineraries can easily be customized and expanded. Take a look at our expanded Highlight tours, Adventures, Day Tours and Beach options. If you have a limited amount of time to spend in Myanmar, check out our City Tours. We’ve added a variety of new excursions for 2017.

Thank you for planning Myanmar for us! We had a blast! The food was great, the pace was great and our guide (Chung Yein) was awesome! We traveled with Chung from Yangon to Ngapali and the fact that we had one guide for the whole trip was outstanding. We got to bond with him and his knowledge and enthusiasm for history and his country were contagious and he had a great sense of humor. And, his English was great. He got us through the airports without any hassle and we were very spoiled by the end. One of the best things he did for us was stopping at a monastery where the locals were having a wedding reception, so we got to observe the receiption first hand! Of all the places we visited, Bagan and Inle Lake were my favorites. Ngapali beach was also great and the hotel was awesome – great setting, great bungalows, great staff and small enough that it did not feel crowded, even at meal times. The various drivers were courteous and the cars were clean. So, thank you for all your help planning our trip!!
